Klonopin (Clonazepam) Dosage

Dosing Klonopin medication
The dosage of Klonopin is dependant on several factors. The dosage may vary depending on the age, previously existing disorders or medical conditions and the severity of the medical condition being treated.

For children, the dosage is quite low. It is calculated based on the weight of the child. This makes it obvious that the dosage for a child is bound to increase as the child grows.

A typical dose of Klonopin in an infant ranges between 0.01/kg/day to 0.03/kg/day up to 30 kg of body weight. However, the dosage should not exceed 0.05/kg/day. In adults, a typical dosage would be 0.5 mg of Klonopin for three times in a day.

Your doctor may increase your dosage level depending on how effective the medicine is in controlling the seizures in your body. However, the maximum limit of dosing your body with drugs like Klonopin will be 20 mg per day.

It is to be noted that the dosage of 20 mg needs to be split into three times accordingly. In cases where the patient is suffering from panic disorder, the Klonopin dosage to start will be 0.25 mg twice per day, i.e. 0.5 mg per day.

There are no clinical trials conducted on the elderly class. So it is advised that aged people should be put on low dosage in the initial phase of the treatment.

Klonopin is a drug that is generally taken orally. It is available in the form of tablets and wafers. The wafers have the capability to get dissolved in your mouth eliminating the need of water.

It is normally observed that children have difficulty in swallowing tablets. Wafer type Klonopin comes in handy in such cases. Also, people who suffer from kidney related diseases are advised to reduce their intake of water.

Wafer type Klonopin is very useful to them too. Klonopin does not have any restriction as to when it needs to be taken. For instance, you can take Klonopin before or after the food. In case it bothers your stomach when taken without food, you can have it with food.

The intake of any drug should be only to the extent that is sufficient for treating the symptoms of the disorder. Any dosage beyond that will only lead to unnecessary complications in the patient.

Such is the case with Klonopin. Klonopin belongs to the group of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Drugs under this group are certified to treat certain types of seizures and panic disorders.

There is always a possibility for any drug to get overdosed. In case of overdose with Klonopin, the symptoms can vary based on the person and with the drugs that he is concurrently consuming.

The symptoms caused by overdose of Klonopin include dull refluxes, increased drowsiness and confusion. In some cases, coma can also be observed. Therefore, it is very essential that the dosage of Klonopin is controlled. Klonopin if combined with alcohol can be life-threatening.

If you are overdosed with Klonopin, then Flumazenil is to be used as an antidote. You must get your stomach washed if you are overdosed. Other supportive treatments would be treating the person with fluids through an intravenous line.

Overdose of Klonopin is bound to reduce the blood pressure, breathing and heart rate. So, it is necessary to monitor any changes in these parameters if one has taken overdoses.

In a few cases, continuous overdose of Klonopin can lead to the ideation of suicidal thoughts. Therefore, patients experiencing this symptom should be monitored carefully and the dosage should be controlled to prevent any untoward incidences.

There are several other treatments available to neutralize the effect of Klonopin when overdosed. The methods are specific to the complications existing at that time.
